Recently, FamilySearch digitized and uploaded tons of microfilmed records, including many from 18th-century Massachsuetts. They're using some sort of AI to transcribe/summarize the handwritten documents. I've noticed that the AI strips out references to race and enslavement in 18thc documents.

🧵Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand: A young human (7?) would like to balance and walk along a very high stone wall. Dad asks if she needs help and she thinks about it, then nods decisively. Moments later she's performing this mighty feat, holding Dad's hand as he keeps her steady. (1)

New paper in Nature. The more a government controls its domestic media, the more it dominates AI training data, the more pro-regime outputs we get from AI. By scraping the open web, LLMs are unwittingly laundering state-coordinated narratives into seemingly objective answers.

Design legend Margaret Calvert is 90 today. Look at that cake! If you've ever admired a road, rail or metro sign in Britain it's likely she had something to do with it. One of Britain's design heroes - happy birthday to her. Photo by: @oshgallerylondon (IG) Cake by:

A dedicated and lucrative effort to put every crime on your home page has convinced people living in a very low crime era that they're in Batman's Gotham. Similarly, groups with names like Tax Payers Alliance have convinced a nation 80% of its tax dollars are being spent on transgender refugees.

did you know that windows natively censors the unicode characters 𓂺, 𓂸, and 𓂹? the only way to get them to display in windows is by combining them with other characters. but, for instance, 🀫𓂸 doesn't work. it HAS to be from the hieroglyph set, like 𓀣. so, for example, this 𓂺𓀣 or 𓀓𓂸
