I wrote for @theguardian.com this week (also in print in this week’s @streetroots.bsky.social) on Portland’s investigation into permit violations at the local ICE facility. It’s one tool for a long process that could ultimately provide some accountability, with eviction unlikely, but in the toolbox.

The debate around what is or isn’t “cancel culture” really just obscures a simple truth that it’s BAD to be massively racist/sexist/homophobic/transphobic and it’s GOOD to speak out against injustice. Some things are good and some things are bad and it’s okay to say which you think are which.

ICE can use many federal offices in PDX but yesterday is the 1st time PIRC has tracked a detention where they were supposedly not held in Macadam & their lawyer couldn't find them before transfer. What we know slows down detention is reduced overnight capacity, which is why we need to shut down NWDC

Exactly this! To clarify some confusion we've seen - the Portland office is not a formal detention center with overnight capacity, and that matters. People don't get out once they're sent to the NWDC in Tacoma. People have gotten out of the Portland ICE office pre-transfer.

This is terrible. Gov. @tinakotek.bsky.social, don't carry water for the rich crybabies who don't want to pay taxes. Show up for the rest of us who struggle to pay for childcare, and for a fantastic program that serves EVERYONE.

The more I think about this the more annoyed I get. People in Portland were *fans* of the fact that RCV disincentived attack politics & rewarded working together & being at least marginally collegial. I will say it again: spreading information about ICE being present when you haven’t verified that information, when you didn’t hear it from a reputable org, or you didn’t see what you knew with certainty to be ICE is not cool. It generates fear and does nothing to actually keep people safe. Stop.

Pretty sucky to see @bynum.house.gov vote for a resolution that praises police-ICE collaboration and “expresses gratitude” to ICE as ICE snatches Oregon residents, including her constituents, from their homes, their workplaces, and courthouses. Totally antithetical to Oregon’s sanctuary state values

the fact that people were told “today you are going to an elementary school to lie to teachers and kidnap kids” and didn’t immediately tell their bosses to go fuck themselves is all you need to know about why ICE should be dismantled

kind of just endlessly sad and grieving that there are so few voices in the public sphere making the basic principled argument that immigration is an affirmative good in every way and the best way for this country to serve humanity is to welcome people who want or need to leave their homes

In San Antonio today, plainclothes ICE officers (not masked this time) arrested, handcuffed, and zip-tied a family of five (yes, ALL of them, including the little children) coming out of their immigration court hearing — which ICE had just had dismissed. www.mysanantonio.com/news/local/a...

ICE agents told Reinaldo in February that he needed to appear at the SW Portland headquarters to sign some paperwork. When he arrived, they detained him, saying he was "on a list from D.C." The only papers for him to sign were to transfer him to a Tacoma detention center, where he is still detained.

this is excellent work & contains call/email templates at the end with callouts for the specific legislative mechanisms democratic senators could use to kill this part of the bill. read the piece. make the calls. there’s no earthly reason any senator’s phone should stop ringing in the near future.
