While I understand this POV — the tenure system has been significantly weakened and the fraction of tenure-track faculty continues to decrease — I think tenure still serves as an important source of friction preventing administration from reshaping the faculty to their whims on short timescales.

Muehlenberg College fired Maura Finkelstein--a tenured, Jewish, professor of anthropology--ostensibly because her personal Instagram briefly shared a post from a Palestinian poet suggesting Zionists be shunned. She had been the target of a months-long harassment campaign.
