It can be incredibly hard to see your progress when recovering from depression or burnout. The whole world keeps demanding certain benchmarks of you to the point that it’s easy to feel like a failure despite your hard work. Remember your progress is your own journey. Every win means something.

I have one: Social media is a bizarre mix of advertising and journaling. I think it's been bad for creator's mental health that much of the advertising has been offloaded onto them to do through social media.

My secondary hot take is that you need to decide if you like making comics for money, attention, or for yourself - because all of those are wildly different metrics of success and two of them don’t require you to financially set fire to your life (for at least 10 years)

If you look at my bibliography, you can see that I have worked many years for a particular publisher, but under different circumstances. The first half of my career it was with one of the first type of creators, and the second half its been only me, or me and a team of queer creators and DAMN

There were days I would turn to Rob and be like “they know I know how much some people get paid there, right?” Or “they know I know it’s not always done like this, right?” Because it really did often feel like I had worked at two different publishers despite them being the same publisher

I’m begging the people in comics who make “money” to publish their numbers & be transparent. Privately talking with me is really great, I feel privileged to have those conversations, but you have also gotta take action publicly. Our wages have stagnated for decades, & it doesn’t have to be this way

There are two types of comic book creators - ones that make real money, with royalties, the entire publisher’s advertising budget and design resources and the “rest”

I legitimately like self publishing books because I’m a control freak and it’s what makes me the most money and allows me to fund my next project - but I live on like $32k a year (my spouse also freelances) and work 12 hour days. Not a possible or wanted life for many.

I was also in a SUPER funky and fucked up situation with a pub where I couldn’t work with anyone else for the past 8 years so I had to self pub, but GUESS WHAT. The kill fee has been doled out, my books are open, get on in here.

I've never had the pleasure of meeting Marie IRL, but my respect for them is through the roof for always keeping it 100 when talking about the comics business when a lot of people treat it like it's taboo to do so. If you make/want to make your own comics, they're a great person to follow.

And while I'm not a huge fan, at ALL, of the "Works of art are always a 100% literal statement of the creator's actual beliefs" school of media analysis... Yeah. I mean, sometimes that just tracks.

I know most of the chatter about Tatsuya these days is Team What Happened vs. Team He's Always Been Like This, but I think both of those theories can be right simultaneously. He's literally, since comic number one, always telegraphed a weird disquiet with both himself and the world.

Watching that guy's brain rot out like a jack-o-lantern left out on the stoop until July 4th has been a hell of a thing.

the same goes for art, movies, music, any sort of thing really looking to the past, there were discussion forums or magazines that released often that clued people in to new releases, much like how 'game showcases' exist now. fans can't seek out what they don't know exists
