One trouble with the bsky Discover tab is that (a) it’s fun to sprinkle Likes on the “yay me!” posts of complete strangers, but (b) you occasionally find you’ve Liked work that is wayyyy out of your zone. Oh well, congrats, person who’s sexually explicit comic is getting bought in bookstores!

The way to "sound like you" is to figure out what you think and say it. All of us who teach students need to talk to them about this message that sounding "like you" means "AI drafting, summarizing, and revising" because this message is on every platform every day.

here's a counter-narrative I hope reaches enough people before it's too late: Companies that lean too hard into AI right now are going to go out of business. Some firms "behind" in AI adoption now will weather the coming storm precisely because they are.

It is time once again to discuss the Most Dad Things we have done in the past year. A couple of reminders: - gender is a social construct, anyone can do Dad Things - you need not be a parent to do a Dad Thing - the definition of a Dad Thing is entirely subjective and maybe made up I’ll go first:

The paperback has finally been published! If Cognitive Load Theory tells us how to avoid overwhelming students, what comes next? Perfectly clear explanations don't guarantee deep understanding. Teaching Meaning, explores what works when telling isn't enough.

Relieved for many reasons today that I’m no longer in higher ed IT. The high wire act of self-hosting a super high-volume LMS (2002-12) gave way to the trust questions of the cloud … I don’t envy them. 😬

There’s a famous Usenet story about a programmer (Mel) who refused higher level abstractions. It was the late 1950s, and even in that era, Mel was…well today we’d call him a boomer. Mel only wrote in raw hexadecimal. He didn’t approve of compilers, and refused to use optimizing assemblers.

I launched an indie webcomic hosting platform several months ago that offered a free and a $4/mo paid plan. This was purely to cover the cost of the infrastructure. But in seeing it grow, I'm no longer worried about the cost. So yeah Webcomic Studio is now free.

The crazy part is that the LLM illusion comes for us all. If your instincts and theory of mind have helped you get where you are--"successful" or even just an everyday smart person--you're susceptible to it. You gotta learn, then *constantly* remind yourself, the right way to think about LLMs.
