It’s also pretty important to make sure that doing this doesn’t hurt your colleagues. We all have to pick and choose what rules/expectations we hold fast to and which ones we modify for our space. But don’t be the guy who makes it hard for the rest of us.

Yes-ish, I think, as this is without question a short-term survival strategy and often is what allows you to keep doing what's best for students in your own space. But: it doesn't fix anything beyond that space. So I think it's important to note the downside here, too. And...

Tip: going into the school year, have a place to keep track of which students you’ve had this type of brief/sincere chat with (”how was that choir performance?” or “today in class you really killed it!”) Really important to have a way to know who you haven’t connected with. (Yet!)

A super-quick thing I did during our writing days this past year? Set a chair out in the hallway. If a student said "they were done," I'd send them out to the chair: "Okay, before you're REALLY done, go sit in the chair and read it, start-to-finish, aloud to yourself. Then come back in!"

My principal and I go to our staffs' family members funerals (if we both can't go then one of us does). And we send handwritten cards to the houses of people who had milestones that year (births, retirements, deaths, etc). It's not easy with a huge staff.

I've found that street photography can work really well. Sets up good discussions of events and representations, observation and interpretation, framing and perspective, image and context, ethics of representation, etc.

The saddest part is seeing new teachers using AI to create required lesson plans to submit and be reviewed by admin. On paper, they seem prepared, but since they didn’t co-create anything with teammates, they fumble through the lesson plan. It’s like following sub plans for themselves! #TeacherSky

My district is pushing us to use Copilot for this very purpose. Instructional coaches are touting the time-saving benefits for creating assessments and planning lessons. When a team of teachers stop collaborating and start plugging in info to be spit out, the heart of teaming disappears. #TeacherSky

So many kids said that to me @ end of yr. That they learned skills that no AI can teach them. To think about human beings/our experiences & how to pull big thinking out of the little things in the txts we read/watched. They said they were real skills & they learned & grew a lot. I ❤️ to see it.
