I wrote this the second summer that everything in Philly was boarded up for protests, partly as an experiment with omniscient POV. It kinda feels like a lot of people don't remember how big the BLM protests were or what they were about, or think what's happening now isn't the same.

I wrote this story in 3 days @viableparadise.bsky.social in 2019. I'd just turned 30. I put it up on the wall with everyone else's then took an exhausted nap, and when I woke up, I was told @tnh.nielsenhayden.com and @pnh.nielsenhayden.com were looking for me. Truly most surreal sale I've ever made.

I'll never think this story has gotten enough buzz. It dropped initially into a busy January and got no traction on social media, but it's some of my best sensory work. You will taste the food if you read it.

Doggerland was a real place. Atlantis wasn't, but mash them up with some apathetic leadership and indifferent gods and you get a damn good metaphor for modern climate change.

The government is saying that violence rules. That snatching foreign leaders and territories, and shooting US citizens in their cars at point blank range, is justified. That resistance is not only futile, it is dangerous. They can say these things. But they cannot force us to believe them.

If they're murdering people in broad daylight with cameras rolling, imagine what they're doing to the thousands being held in the camps.

I'm seeing a lot of people suggest local or state law enforcement be mobilized against ICE. That will not happen. The order will not be given, because the civilian leaders know it would not be followed. ICE is the police. The carceral state will not defend us from itself.

MPR playing an eye witness account right now of ICE shooting directly through the windshield at her face and not giving her medical care for 10 minutes.

DHS tweeted this yesterday. Little more than 24 hours later, ICE agents just shot and killed a legal observer in Minneapolis.

I do find the discourse about Americans needing to censure over our government's criminal foreign policy a little odd, given that the same gocernment is also violently occupying portions of the country with militarized police. The oppressed are not complicit in their opressor's other crimes.
