I say this very kindly, but this is where critical thinking skills and free will come into play. We are not being straightjacketed into chairs with wired-open eyes, while artistic propaganda screams into our eyeballs 24/7 in a Clockwork Orange hell. We can choose to disengage with any form of art.

I agree. I have mentioned here before that art—for me specifically—exists on a value neutral plane, taking on (and reflecting back, in some instances) the values of those who engage with it. I do not regard art as an arbiter of moral virtue, and playing purity tetris with art is confounding to me.

Yep, exactly right. In the—very realistic—scenario where I would have to solve unhinged, intricate exponentials while I'm out and about grocery shopping or enjoying a coffee, these glasses will come in clutch. How useful and necessary.

I had such a great time attending my first Worldcon in Seattle last weekend! At the awards ceremony itself tho there was a moment that made quite sad. Imagine how you would feel, getting nominated for this lovely honor, and then have this happen. With a little thoughtfulness we can do better

This was genuinely bizarre at the ceremony, and really not okay. Read the whole thread--M.L. is exactly right about the fix. Just be consistent in reading off zine mastheads! Either read ALL the names for everyone, or just read the magazine titles

This is important, and Worldcon STILL needs to do far better -- khōréō is one of the most important publications in genre fiction and they do amazing work. Every one of their contributors deserves to be acknowledged and not skipped over for having so-called "difficult" names

I watched this happen live and it was jaw-droppingly uncool. Celebrating creators means saying their names and pronouncing them right. The spec fic community is blessed with some of the world’s brightest minds and I’d encourage us to apply that brightness to doing so much better than this.

This whole post, but especially the constructive critique: the entire issue is avoidable with the barest modicum of effort.

Conrunning and missing pronunciations for some reason? The Ignytes collect this info from finalists every year and I am happy to share that guide with you if only to keep this shit from continuing to happen when there is no good reason for it

We're out there trying to celebrate the *people* doing the work in the industry, not to shuffle them under a vague "etc."

This. Please listen to the finalists on how they want their masthead to be read and if there are any rules on your part make them clear early on. Also: pronunciation guides. They make us, people with non-Anglo name feel respected and make the presenter's lives easier.

There’s nothing like attending Worldcon in-person as team @khoreo.bsky.social's representative, as one of the actual Finalists for Best Semiprozine, only for our masthead to be entirely skipped over, while everyone else’s names and mastheads were read in full, exactly as it was on the program sheet.

Back home, feeling like I’ve been pancaked by the Worldcon freight train. Meeting everyone, being a part of ConCurrent, repping my beloved khōréō as a finalist, bunking with my CW 2019 class (and karaoke) were the absolute highlights of my trip! 🖤🖤🖤 (I have more OPINIONS, but caffeine first)

It's gotten to the point where I've had people earnestly argue with me that GenAI is a "cognitive upgrade" for brainstorming, and I'm missing out by shunning it altogether. It's inconceivable to them that I'd prefer to use my own damn brain, you know, the "brain" part in brainstorming.
