TFW a composer on another platform brags about this totally new way they have for harmonizing melodies and it turns out to be counterpoint. Like, the-thing-we’ve-done-since-the-Notre-Dame-School-in-the-12th-century counterpoint. 😑

Hey! Scholars! If you're using someone's work in your class, sometimes it's nice to email them and tell them, because then they might feel good about their research instead of entirely crushed by the academic humanities' ongoing descent into the grave

Doing transposition in theory this week, so I gave them "Never Gonna Give You Up" as a melody to transpose. "It's too early to be rickrolled" they said 😂 I will always take any chance to rickroll my students

I keep seeing people use the "It's not _____, it's ____" construction as a red flag for AI writing, and folks? We don't have to concede the concept of juxtapositions to the machines. It's a very useful rhetorical device, stop being weird about it.

I really hate how "creator culture" conditioned everyone to think that because some creators get paid for it by the platforms, that anyone who posts anywhere is basically a merchant providing a service who has to keep customers happy

A student from music theory pedagogy sat in on my sophomore theory class today, and he said after that I'm fabulous and that I made him want to take theory again 💕 Maybe the demons are wrong; maybe I'm not a bad teacher. He also forgot he was observing and fully raised his hand to participate 😂

A framing that I find helpful: it's not that various AI algorithms aren't "intelligent" (though they aren't), it's just that we've severely underestimated just how intelligent human beings are.

I'm hardly the first person to note this, but it's enormously instructive that our President and his followers saw the message "THE ONLY THING MORE POWERFUL THAN HATE IS LOVE" and understood it, correctly, as an attack on them

Next time somebody tries to get me to justify the existence of the humanities, I’ll just point out how for the past two Super Bowls we’ve all jumped online and engaged in collective semiotics and hermeneutics of the half-time show as text.

If you are a novice improvisor and you want a gentle introduction, try playing the black keys of the piano over any of the following: "Superstition" and "I Wish" by Stevie Wonder, "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye, and the first two minutes of "Mothership Connection" by Parliament.

Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is stay soft in a world that keeps asking you to harden up. Pay attention to what steadies you — a quiet moment, a voice, a song — and keep those things close. They ain’t escapes; they’re anchors.

The one difference between the USA and other analogous governments is the porousness of the information environment. The instant, global dissemination of cell phone videos that contradict official accounts. It is essential that people continue to document everything

Always remember that listening to music can be the entire activity. Put on headphones. Blast it through speakers. Close your eyes and just listen. Listening to music is not a background activity. It can be the entire journey, and it's worth the time.

My son put it best when he was a young kid: "Cats are great because you get happy every time you encounter them. You turn a corner, and there's a cat there, and it's like there's a cat, and that's great." I always think about it whenever I turn a corner and encounter a cat.

I tell my students they have to form a self-conception as someone who *just does* go to class. If you wake up every morning and have to *decide* to go to class, you will end up missing too much class even if you’re a fairly disciplined person. You can’t be weighing the pros and cons every day
