The Artemis II astronauts are on their way to seeing the far side of the Moon! Just 24 people in the history of the human race have seen it with their own eyes.👀 This is what the Moon's far side looks like! It is dominated by Lunar highlands; there are fewer dark areas (maria) due to thicker crust.

Victor Glover is not only on track to become the first person of color to ever leave low Earth orbit, he is also currently *piloting* #ArtemisII

I think this particular moment is a challenging one for those of us who do #scicomm because we want to get our audience pumped up for science but also there is a real moral element to how we word things and what information we choose to share. We are also in a media ecosystem with lots of disinfo

What value this mission provides: -- PR for Lockheed Martin, whose weapons have been used for the genocide in Gaza -- Learning how to fly to the moon in this way -- Preparing for a future mission to land on the moon -- Advancing prep for commercialization and militarization of space -- PR for US 🔭

The distance is such that the entire crew will be breaking the previous record of human distance from earth. They will be traveling in a spacecraft designed by weapons-maker Lockheed Martin and defense company Airbus, the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (OMPCV). It is OMPCV's first crewed flight.

The Artemis II mission will be piloted by Victor Glover, who will fly further into space than any Black person has before. Christina Koch, a white woman, will be flying the furthest into space that a woman has ever flown before. The mission is a test run for a future moon landing trip.

If all goes according to plan, in a few hours, a crew of astronauts will begin a journey that will take them on a loop around the moon. Here's a video that NASA put together to help people visualize the journey through space, first orbiting the earth before looping around the moon and flying home 🔭
