Weird thing that Tolstoy does in W&P is refer to the russian army as "our" army, as in "out line and the enemy's stood far from each other." I love these reminders that there's a storyteller and an audience, though it also makes me feel a bit left out, but I think that's a good thing.

I read Kafka's "The Judgement" a few days ago and in the moment I felt it was a cool story, but it's been coming to mind since then every once in a while. Making me think that some stories hit you hard then disappear, others are more like a little parasite slowly burrowing their way deep into you.

I genuinely don't understand math teachers talking like AI has any impact on our work whatsoever, unless curriculum designers find ways to perfect the "make a worksheet" button.

Maybe this is a stupid math teaching question but does anybody actually understand how practice works? I always feel like I hit a point where I'm just assigning a lot of questions of every sort...I know about the need to review ("space practice") but otherwise it feels like a bit ???? in my mind.

I re-read Saunders' "Home" (in NEW AMERICAN STORIES) and idk if it was me or what but it didn't quite connect. Kid came out of his room to pee and then peed on the floor as I was talking to him. I ran off to get the paper towels and he took five steps, peeing continuously as he did, then smiled and went back to bed.

I'm not sure if I'm just getting sick of this Wodehouse collection or if the last two stories were bad but when these Jeeves stories miss for me, they really miss.

Maybe splitting hairs but I don't think devices are eroding our *capacity* to pay attention. I think they're outcompeting books for attention on trains, bus stops, lazy afternoons, etc. More importantly we are trained *by the devices* to have flighty attention *when using the devices.*

Was reading another Jeeves story and had the feeling that Wodehouse's dialogue sounds a ton like Sam Lipsyte's. Not sure if this is the best pair of excerpts to illustrate it, or what exactly I think they have in common...punchy, jokey conversations?

On the subway this AM I read the first story in this Jeeves and Wooster collection, enjoyed it tremendously. I'm always surprised how well the humor holds up, it got some real laughs from me.
