It's amazing that any programmer would look at the "take an icepick to the parts of your brain that you use to program" machine and think this is a good idea. It indicates they are already utterly fucking up at being programmers, even before they touch the bullshit machine.

This is deskilling *the* most vital, essential parts of writing code. The part of writing code that actually makes software work, that supposedly justifies being paid programmer salaries.

The *moment* chatgpt regurgitates some slop code, it becomes code the programmer has no mental model for, and definitely can't be fucked to read instead of giving it another pass through the bullshit machine. The programmer cannot maintain code, which is like 90% of what programming *is*

Which again: the vast vast majority of programming occurs *after* the code is written, and involves the key skill of reading code and constructing a mental model of it. These skills, specifically, are hammered to absolute dogshit by using chatgpt. Instantly.

This is a slippery slope, because if the programmer can't be fucked to write the code, which you already know they are, they *definitely* can't be fucked to read code. They'll slap it right back into the bullshit machine for it next time they need to touch it.

The very first time they have to touch that code, even if it's just the next week, it'll be as alien as any code someone else wrote. Because someone else did write that code, and then it was digested to be statistically similar. Along with the documentation, which'll be documentation-shaped.

Aside: people who use chatgpt to write code are generally semiliterate, so I don't expect them to get that reference. Or, be able to actually read it. users.cs.utah.edu/~elb/folklor...
