I will always oppose separatism. We live in the greatest country on earth. But if people want this, they should slow down and do it right: run on a platform that they'd hold such a vote, negotiate a question, set clear rules and clear yes/no committees. Albertans deserve that.

Nobody ran on separatism. Or on lowering citizen initiative thresholds. Or on weakening Elections Alberta. Or having such a serious question be 1 of 10, added at the 11th hour. Albertans have been subjected to separatism by subterfuge.

Of note- the previous referendum threshold was 293,976 before the UCP changed the rules. If using Elections Alberta's random statistical sampling method applied with 95% confidence (which eliminates 5% of signatures automatically, as with Forever Canada)- the separatist petition would have failed.

The verification/counting of the seperatist signatures is on hold, though, as a court ordered injuction prevents them from being tallied until a decision is rendered on a case brought forwad by First nations. That decision is believed to be coming in the days or weeks ahead.
