Look, I think it's neat that Haley Stevens is paying tribute to a bona fide Detroit icon by doing Lily Tomlin's Edith Ann character all grown up on the campaign trail.

Sorry but "Darline Graham Nordone, the Sister Senator," is a Lauren Lapkus character on Comedy Bang Bang who has appeared six times, including in 2023 at the Charleston live show. I can hear the voice already.

The polar opposite reactions here to the deaths of Sam Neill and Lindsey Graham are such a reminder that we all have a choice whether to live our lives in a way that brings joy or misery to those around us. I think if you’re remembered fondly as Sam Neill is today, you’ve pretty much won at life.

I mean, the first openly gay male Senator being a Republican from South Carolina replacing Lindsey Graham would be kind of funny, you've got to admit.

Whatever residual affection I had for Al Franken as a formative voice on Saturday Night Live is pretty readily destroyed by the notion that he apparently thought this was a real knee slapper. Come on, man.

My car keys were missing since Tuesday, and my 4 year old just found them under the couch (though I swear I looked there multiple times). Pretty sure I'd get the kid a pony right now if he asked I'm so delighted with him.

In other news, holy shit what a performance last night. I don't care how much of a middle aged hipster dad cliche it makes me - they're my favorite band, and the best live act going. Long live Wilco!

I get that the Senate is a place of alarming collegiality, even with colleagues whose politics you despise. But like ... trying to remember the last Democratic Senator to die in office. Feinstein, I guess? Did Republicans go out of their way to offer this kind of tribute?

I never bought the speculation that Trump was blackmailing Graham. I just assumed that Graham, like many politicians, had no moral compass, and simply junked his actual feelings for Trump when doing so brought him power and status. Either way, though, what a sad, harmful life he led.

Seeing Wilco for the first time since 2019 (and live music for the first time since 2021) tonight! Not a bad seat in the house at DPAC, which is good because we're about as high up in the balcony as you can get. Anyhow, yay for parents actually getting a night out on the town!

Aside from his reprehensible moral character, his reaction to all of this, from the entitlement to the dog-whistle accusations against a shadowy "they", really have convinced me that six years of Senator Platner as a strategically critical Democratic vote would have made John Fetterman look tame.

I've told this story on here before, but a Doonesbury referencing the Seinfeld finale led me to ask my parents what "master of my domain" meant. To their credit (?), they gave me a full and honest answer, and I never asked another question about what I read in Doonesbury ever again.

Basically the path to 51 for Democrats without Maine is this (and they can win Maine if they drop Platner): North Carolina, Alaska and Ohio get you to 50. Then you gotta go all in on either -Texas -Nebraska (Independent Dan Osborn) -Iowa

I think when pondering potential US Senate candidates, especially non-politicians, we have to remember that one of the things we're asking of them in seeking this office is to be work colleagues with Ted Cruz. I just don't think I can ask that of Ms. Rachel.

Everyone is wrong sometimes. But there’s a difference between wrong because one was misled and being wrong because one didn’t listen to people urging them not to dismiss warning signs. No one is saying one can’t be wrong. They are asking folks to acknowledge it and take steps to not be wrong again.

I have edited a lot of sexual-assault-accusation articles, and this one easily clears every veracity check: contemporaneous emails with her therapist, a boyfriend who knew, a woman she warned—all before Platner ran for office. Good on Politico for nailing it, and on Jenny Racicot for speaking up.

Exclusive: Woman who dated Graham Platner says he sexually assaulted her
The Maine Democrat denied the allegations and said, “Any accusation of non-consensual behavior is categorically untrue.”

I've wondered this with regard to both Osborn and Fetterman - is there any history of an Independent choosing to caucus with nobody? Wouldn't that shut them out of any committee assignments whatsoever, or is there some sort of protocol for that?

At a kids 4th of July parade at the Durham Farmers Market. The kids decorate their bikes with odds and ends from the Scrap Exchange, then march through the market while a string band plays them on from the sidelines. You can pry my NPR-ass vision of America from my cold, dead hands.

Bold choice of Travis Kelce to not only insist on a garter toss at the reception but also to choreograph the whole thing to Clarence Carter's "Strokin'", but I guess he's just old fashioned like that.

great america state fair just fundamentally doesn’t understand what a state fair is. state fairs are not grand celebrations of all that make us proud to be americans. they are lynchian phantasmagorias of family-friendly kitsch braided with licentious perversity and just a sprinkle of cosmic horror.

When planning our wedding, I suggested a portion of the reception where the DJ just played every Chubby Checker twist song in succession, perhaps with a decoy thrown in there to throw people off the scent. I don't know that anything before or since has come so close to derailing our marriage.

The big flaw right now in amending the Constitution so that Mamdani could run for President is that I don't think you could do it without allowing Elon Musk to run for President. Kind of like how the other side can't let Trump run for a third term without opening the door to Obama running again.
