I keep getting asked if I’m worried about my job because I often speak up about issues. The answer is no. I’ve learned over the years that if employers want to hire you or if they want to fire you, they can always find a reason. It’s not worth compromising your morals or values for anyone.

The fact that we have to endure so many spaces where people calling out racism, sexism, and homophobia face more consequences than the people actually being racist, sexist, and homophobic tells much of what you need to know about how far away we are from being a truly functional, equitable society.

What we're seeing in the "don't sign up for protests" discourse is what Paulo Freire described as the convert's failure to trust the knowledge of the oppressed. As the convert tries to stand in solidarity with the oppressed, they refuse to let go of a world where they were the authority by default.

The Civil Rights era can be a valuable tool for understanding protest, grassroots and large scale organizing, communication, etc. However, to utilize it effectively requires examination, scrutinizing, and figuring out what still applies today and how. So many reference it without doing work needed.

Civil disobedience is refusing to obey laws/demands/orders/commands of the gov. RSVPing to a protest and potentially being a target isn’t an example. It’s just a bad tactic. And telling targeted populations to become more of one without a clear long term vision or ways to protect them is a bad idea.

Primary them all. The messaging will happen (and is happening) no matter what! You honor people you admire or have esteem for. You can condemn murder without honoring him! If they’re worried about messages, worry about the one it sends to those they rely on for votes, who CK said awful things about.

Many in higher ed are showing us who they are. So, we should believe them. They say “free speech” for racism/sexism/homophobia but now punish comments they see as “insensitive”, “disruptive”, etc. And then give speeches or write op-eds decrying the lack of “free speech” or “viewpoint diversity”.

It always amazes me when college admin feel qualified to comment/write about how students are or student issues when so many of them barely interact with students daily. And when they do, it’s often a carefully selected group of students that is rarely representative of college students as a whole.

A thing about making statements in positions of power is that when you make statements, you’re not just giving perspective about a subject/event; you’re assigning importance to it. And then it becomes reasonable to ask why one event/subject deserved a statement and similar ones are met with silence.

Selective outrage is indicative of disingenuous intent. Using political violence to push agendas before knowing facts, ignoring political violence that doesn’t support an agenda, and ignoring facts/stats about political violence shows one has little interest in preventing violence/improving society.

Something I go back to is that everyone who made a statement had the chance to be more general and acknowledge the school shooting, recent political and general violence, etc. Every acknowledgement and moment of silence could have been about the collective but they actively chose to be selective.

It’s interesting and telling that when people expressed racist, sexist, or homophobic views on social media posts and statements in the past, institutions and organizations would say versions of “We don’t agree but we can’t (won’t) do anything.” But now they’re all about firing and removing people.

A lot of people won’t care, but advocating for the death penalty is inconsistent with calling for the end of political violence. The death penalty IS political violence, and worse, it is government sanctioned political violence.

Political violence can be both action and inaction. It is funding billions in weapons that are used to commit genocide and starve children. It is treating school shootings as inevitable and refusing to protect children. Politicians condemn the individual act while supporting the collective ones.

I teach the Reconstruction, and we need more people to truly engage with the first, not only accomplishments but also the white rage/backlash that resulted from the NOTION of equality and how the Dunning School of thought influenced generations (even today!) into believing racist myths about it.

Rather than address gun violence, there has been a big push from media, politicians, etc. to treat gun violence as completely inevitable or an acceptable trade off for having expanded gun rights/access. That allows those in power to pretend they have no ability to make change. None of that is true.
