Guess the other option is radical honesty - tell the public what the trade-offs are and test the true preference order. Want much lower migration at the cost of less social care provision? Want no tax rises at the cost of inadequate NHS funding? Want no Brexit backsliding at cost of higher prices?

I doubt anyone will take that much notice of a wafer-thin US-UK trade thingy, which will be subsumed by much bigger actual agreements between the UK and EU anyway

Correct reaction - the passion of politicians in the uk for shooting the country in the foot and calling it a ‘win’ appears limitless.

when women can choose, they choose to have significantly fewer kids whether they're in Norway or Japan, and I'm not certain there's anything that counters that, no matter how generous the state is. Many women don't want to be mothers, and that's their right and should come first.
