You can see the links in this chain being forged in the early-to-mid 1700s across many colonial powers, and coming into full effect by the 1800s, when it started tricking back into the seats of power. Crossdressing, for many reasons (including performance), was commonplace in Shakespeare's time.

This is crucially important for anyone looking back on the history of trans medicine to remember *and also* that it's an artifact of the wider colonial pogrom against global gender diversity. Empires always eventually bring their tools of oppression home.

I wrote this last year when the Cass Review came out, but basically a few people in politics and the medical establishment are nostalgic for the days when doctors aligned with the state to enforce patriarchal norms on all women and trans people, including by disregarding their self-determination

For most of the 20th century, most trans people ourselves were largely lumped in with all pathologized forms of queerness and subject to violent forms of conversion therapy--electroshock, sleep deprivation, induced vomiting. Here's an excellent recent book tracking that history.

Note this does not mean the health care itself is bad--the entire field of gynecology was born from experiments on enslaved women and liberating treatments like abortion and birth control used for a century by eugenicists against patient's will. What matters is the patient's self-determination.

Thus all the treatments we think of as "gender-affirming care" existed long before words like "transsexual," but as forms of violence used against people whose bodies did not align with the medical establishment's definition of manhood and womanhood, with fertility and conformity the primary concern

In general any history of trans medicine needs to start from the fact that, for most of its history, psychiatry believed gender conformity was itself a measure of health. This fueled a long history of institutionalization and medical violence against women, intersex people, and queer people.
