I personally know multiple trans people who have been left eith no sex hormones in their system whatsoever for months at a time because some quack decided it was okay for them to be on blockers w no HRT or withdrew HRT post bottom surgery. This is incredibly bad for you.

The obvious benefit of Over The Counter availability is that you know that what you are buying is what you intended to buy, you have regulated manufacture and quality control, a recommended dosage limit printed on the label, you have clear batch labelling and ways of tracking tainted batches, etc.

Im thinking of trans men in particular here as testosterone is a controlled substance and designated a class c drug. HRT is free for menopausal women in my country, it should be as easy as that.

Narratives against DIY routinely fail to acknowledge that the trans community is a community that on a fundamental level *needs* access to materials such as medicines for transition, and restricting these severely is going to drive criminalisation of the trans community as a minority altogether.

Trans people were using HRT back in the days of DiethylStilbesterol and continued using it long after it was a proven carcinogen in the 1970s because there was no other choice than using a proven poisonous drug to transition with for those without the wealth to transition.

One thing that is very notable from my son's partners (who is a trans man & also has some long term disabilities) interactions with the NHS is that he gets a lot of "have you tried not being trans" type comments The NHS is not great at non cis white man medicine

I suspect the only reason I've had a more "effective" transition than several of my peers is because I went on injection monotherapy as soon as I could, and so I had actual feminizing and not menopausal levels oestrogen from the first year 🤷‍♀️

ALSO - the other thing I've discovered is that a lot of advice about HRT is _way_ out of date. In the 70s/80s a lot of the hormones were synthetic - and they WERE dangerous. this is no longer true HRT advice for cis women in peri-menopause is ALSO bad in the uk (& a lot of gatekeeping too)

this - the NHS is becoming actively trans hostile and also the waiting lists are so long I'll be dead before I ever reach the front of any of them (& yeah - it's not a massive risk, it's pretty easy AND all the advice I've seen/read is absolutely adamant you need to do blood tests)

Many transition via DIY resources. I've never seen an endocrinologist or a psych because I don't want to go through a combative and adversarial diagnostic process to access what I need. The healthcare risks are along the lines of "increased risk of breast cancer because I have breasts now."
