It's hard to imagine this hardline migration law passing during the previous 🇪🇺Parliament term. But the new right-wing majority delivered by voters in the 2024 EU election means von der Leyen's centre-right EPP can team up with the far right (Le Pen's PfE, Weidel's ESN, Meloni's ECR) to pass this.

The EU is moving towards setting up return hubs in 3rd countries for rejected asylum seekers, following an agreement reached between the 🇪🇺Parliament and national governments. It's meant to bypass the problem of peoples' home countries refusing to take them back.

For two decades people travelling in Europe have been entitled to compensation for delayed flights under EU passenger rights law. National governments want to pull back on that compensation in response to airline complaints. MEPs are fiercely resisting.

Excellent Guardian piece today by Alberto Alemanno on the self-defeating deregulation fever being imposed right now by EU leaders (particularly #Merzoni, implemented by VDL). The problem with the EU is not in Brussels. It is in the national capitals who block completion of the EU single market.

Wake up Europe - you're next

While Europe's centrist leaders in 🇬🇧🇫🇷🇩🇪 have spent the past year appeasing Trump, in past months the far right recognised opposing🇺🇸 plays well with voters. Our cowardly leaders (other than 🇪🇸Sanchez) are ceding the moral high ground to the far right.

I spoke to @eurcorrespond.bsky.social about why, after 2 years in which most superfans stuck by the contest amid controversy, #Eurovision2026 has been a step too far. Like many others, I'm not watching this year. Europe is self-sabotaging one of its most powerful tools of pop soft power.
