Everything is downstream of the notion of knowledge generation across all fields as a genuine public good that enriches society as a whole. We need to get universities to start making that case aggressively to students, donors, politicians and voters.

This is both a correct description of the current situation and also very clearly the thing that needs to change. Higher education cannot survive without public support and that will never be forthcoming until we convince a critical mass of the public to support knowledge for its own sake.
