A superb thread which I had to read twice as the first time I was too busy marvelling at the alt text for every image.

rules for watching Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1979) - try to guess the age of everyone in screen - shout “78!” or similar - look cast up on IMDb - discover they are all younger than you are now

Rob Reiner: I'm going to make a coming of age drama, a fantasy adventure story, a romantic comedy, a psychological horror and then a courtroom drama. Us: Across your entire career? Reiner: In a 6 year period. Us: That sounds- Reiner: -Each one will be arguably the best movie in that genre.

My dad abhors any negative comments about immigrants. Asked him recently why he’s so strong on it: ‘Because we’re always happy to take the rich and clever ones. Which means it’s not about disliking immigrants. It’s about disliking the poor and vulnerable. And that’s a bad human instinct.’

Reminder to anyone who needs it today: Reading books (at home, on the bus, in Starbucks); owning books; loving books; discussing books. None of these things are “performative” unless you’re selling tickets.

Today I got down my 1986 copy of Rider, in honour of Jilly. I was far too young to be given the hardback from the library by my mother 😳 but I couldn't wait to get my own copy. I normally keep my books pristine, no broken spine. But this one has been so well read and loved, and it shows it.

Jane Goodall's work insisting, with evidence from her brilliant and tenacious fieldwork, that we were not so separate from animals, and they were much more like us than the Eurocentric theorists asserted, was so important.

I love London so much. So much. Did you know that London has the lowest level of ethnic violence of any city of comparable size in the world? Multiculturalism has in fact worked here. They just don’t want it to be true because we happen to have a Muslim mayor.

A producer told me once she has to warn young crewmembers to avoid being alone with Aykroyd. "Not because he's a creep, he's a gentleman. But if you let him strike up a conversation the next thing we know all the PAs will be huddled in his dressing room learning how humans evolved from dolphins."
