"I use AI because learning to do this stuff would take too long!" The time's going to pass, regardless. Make something real and true out of it. Anything else is surrendering your voice before you even try to speak.

One thing we must do among all else in this time is to preserve the evidence of what’s happening now in the US, and to do it offline. Dates, names, votes, disappearances (of people and information). OFFLINE. Create a thousand archives full of evidence. It can seem hopeless, but history matters.

The right-wing attack on universities and the widespread use of ChatGPT to replace thinking and writing are two sides of the same relentless assault on what the Greeks called paideia: the education and development of citizens as ethical beings engaged in their communities.

This seems clearly correct, but it baffles me that we aren’t doing a better job in humanities of persuading students that the value of human life and thought are independent of its products. I fear that battle is already lost in secondary schools.
