Once, when I was hearing about initiatives to get more women in STEM majors to support women, I asked if it might make more sense to fund the majors and programs where women already are as well? As a way to, you know, support women? The response was 🦗 🦗🦗 Bc women were in the arts and humanities

Our faculty at the CSU found the same even with our lower cap courses (still to high for good writing pedagogy). It is a net good to pay a lot of money to train good engineers but not charge more tuition! Any student gets the same shot. But cutting humanities leads to insolvency. Give it 20 years.

I'm able to use a road bike, but seconding it lets us get by with one car. It has some side bags and a basket and snow tires for winter. And because my bike is transportation and replaced a car, I was able a comfy one that makes riding to work okay on my old joints and back.

Belle Greene has many anecdotes, but I love remembering how many women book collectors and dealers she connected with while I think her romantic entanglements tend to captivate the novels. I work in an academic library where patrons can chat with a human librarian 24/7. We use a co-op so librarians across the world help each other when your specific staff are off duty. This is a pretty common service, and it generally provides better info than AI for reference questions. Jusy FYI 🤷🏻‍♀️

No one expects "enjoy solving math problems" to be the primary objective of a college math class, but a lot of folks seem to think the point of English classes is to love the act of reading. If you want to read a book for pleasure, read! If you want to be taught a skillset, take a class.

I don't think it is only our job to teach students how to read long novels; it may also be our jobs to teach them how to live without an online surveillance state. To learn without intrusive apps. To swap notes. To write in a book's margins. To exist in their communities in slow, clunky, human ways.
