As much as i love commuting on my bike it is bad for my nerves and mood. Today someone repeatedly laid on the horn because i was waiting in a left turn lane and turning left. That's it. Didn't cut him off or make him late. Light was red. A bike existed and that justifies intimidation with a machine.

I went the other path, and: teaching is much harder. The stakes are different. The human in front of you matters much more than that email or that plan. Teaching is a carefully crafted setpiece where the wire frames were hidden or shown strategically. It left me so drained. I miss it so much 😭

I revised the draft I was putting off revising because of Big Feelings, but it turns out it wasn't as bad as I thought and relatively simple. Yet I will learn nothing from this experience.

In sum, I am very tired. But I believe there is still a role for open use technology spaces in universities. They dont look the same as the 2000 computer lab, but they still decrease barriers to experimentation and play, and therefore learning and research.

I started at Case a year ago with a question: what role does a digital scholarship center play in 2020s when AI is pushed everywhere, there are too few staff, and personal computers are pervasive. The Freedman Center reopens next week with some answers to those questions. case.edu/library/news...

I've been thinking a lot about a harm reduction approach to AI for those of us that cant refuse and keep our jobs (staff dont get academic freedom 🤘). How do you look like you are engaging and maybe even engage in ways that are less all-in, while not abandoning the necessity of critical use

For so many reasons, but the core for me is: experts are best positioned to figure out what the question really is. An LLM responds to the linguistic pattern. We get the thinking. Every office hours appointment I have had starts and ends miles apart. As the expert, I help make that journey shorter.
