I've come to believe that, when someone talks about moving out of the inner metro because they "need more space," they really just don't want to participate in shared community any more. Or at least they want the opportunity to opt-in and out at their own convenience.

I find Tolkkinen's article to be fairly tonedeaf, but I agree with her here. There is a harmful mass delusion in this country that the individual and the family unit exist apart from society, and it causes them to act with outrage anytime they are asked to behave as though other people are real.

anyway here are some books i’ve read in the last three months that i’ve loved

The Poppy War was such a dreadful read that I automatically think less of someone’s recommendations if they highly rate that book. It’s not actually a “good” book, it’s just shocking and gruesome.

if i hated The Poppy War so so so so much, like it’s one of the worst books I’ve ever read, I should not even bother with any of RF Kuang’s later work, right? or are they sharp departures?
