Here in Minneapolis, hundreds of clergy from all over the country have been deployed into the streets to participate in ICE/DHS watch. The hail from a range of religious traditions, and have come from all over. This particular group is in a heavily immigrant neighborhood.

The reason the Democratic Party is being slow to get behind “Abolish Ice” is that they don’t want to get into a fight about law enforcement. I don’t think it has ever been more clear to white Dem voters the threat to democracy and rule of law creating categories of other actually is.

I think we need to start to and about white Democratic voters vulnerabilities to narratives about crime, safety and law enforcement. We need to start being clear that any willingness to continue to allow a different standard of policing for any Other, is enabling fascism.

I would argue that the case for dismantling ICE has, at this point, virtually nothing to do with larger questions of immigration enforcement and reform, it's just clearly incompatible with a free and democratic society to maintain a secret police force with sweeping and arbitrary authority.
