If I'm honest, FHWA getting de-funded would probably be a good thing. Removing the incentive for states/cities to blow billions on highway expansions is not only a great climate policy, it would dramatically reduce the incentive for states/cities to overbuild their highways.

I-5 southbound at the Moda Center will be closed for over a month. In my view, this is a test run for when we get rid of I-5 in the inner eastside altogether. That won't happen without generational investment in transit and years of work... but it DEFINITELY won't happen if we don't talk about it.

We always need to have a choice to get around PDX by bike, especially downtown near Providence Park. So why has PBOT minimized a bike safety corridor because it took away a few car parking spots? (And why do advocates still need to fight for every bit of street space for people not in cars?)

Add together people less than 16 yo, and the 1/3 of people who could have drivers licenses, but don't, and the people who have a license but are not driving for other reasons, and we get...50% of the population for whom our car-first, and often car-only, infrastructure is not working for.

There's some good suggestions in here, including that Portland should actively court national retailers to backfill some of the larger vacant spaces in downtown. Independent retailers would only be helped by more stories like Uniqlo's pending arrival. bricksneedmortar.substack.com/p/portlands-...

ODOT is closing the I-5 south ramp at the Rose Quarter for over a month in September. Many of us have suggested a low-cost RQ I-5 "improvement" project could/should include ramp closures. Imagine if we studied how drivers navigated this temporary closure and the impact to the area.

I agree that vacant storefronts are a problem, but I wish this study had started with an analysis of the causes of vacancies and then developed solutions to them rather than relying on anecdotes and deciding on the solution in advance.
