The great Beverly Jenkins has a book where the heroine beats a villain half to death, sets him on fire, *and* drowns him. A Bloomy Head (Regency) and the fantasy romance oeuvre of T Kingfisher use decapitation for fun and profit. I myself had a villain eaten by eels because I could.

If you're writing a SFF / thriller you can have all the gratuitous sex scenes you want but the murder and violence has to advance plot and character. If you're writing romance, the *sex scenes* need to advance the plot, and the *murder and violence* are where you go to town. simple.
