I've been part of local campaigns to close prisons. There's so much organizing that has to happen. I wish people understood that it often takes years. We're going to need state/county level moratorium campaigns as a start.

You can draw your own conclusions for why this might be the case, but I don’t have anything civil to say about it.

These core platform designs and business logics have been repeatedly shown to be harmful across a myriad of dimensions by both independent and significant internal research (that we know because of how much has been leaked), but even brand new platforms continue to adopt those design patterns.

Now, there are teams of people at these companies (constantly understaffed and roiled by layoffs and turnover and knowledge loss), who do good work trying to mitigate some of the worst effects; but none of this work extends to the core platform designs and operant business logic in a meaningful way.

Tech companies and policy-makers are currently rolling out online safety mechanisms for protecting children that directly conflict with all of the copious research and expert opinion on what they should be doing instead to prevent child harms. No one cares about the research.

Nobody wants to know how to make platforms that work in ways that aren’t harmful to their users. They just don’t. They just want to put a fig leaf over the ways their business models directly correlate to those harms.

Among the reasons I’m burned out and inimical to tech now is in my last job I watched social media companies fund meaningful outside research into halting the use of their platforms by terrorists and violent extremists at a platform design level and then ignore it all or do the exact opposite.
