My personal belief is this comes from years of attempts to Commoditize the film and games industry by businessmen. People who were executives at soup companies coming into an industry that made bespoke products and tried to turn it into a conveyor belt of canned soup. MBAs

Its incredibly ironic the games industry is obsessed with the functions, semiotics and stylistic language of gambling but unwilling to actually take a gamble on anything

Here's the thing. I've seen an industry afraid of risk. In Canada's film industry. The only reason it sustains itself is by selling itself out as crew for american productions. We do not invest in ourselves so we never grow to anything beyond service work.

look to hide from the changing waves* this is a problem of their own making

so now they're afraid to risk money because the publishing and economic landscape of games (and movies) has rendered most consumers numb and unable to find new games. So they look for guaranteed successes They look for easy, low risk investment they look to hide change

By pushing budgets higher by destabilizing trust in consumers through Service based practices (streaming, GaaS, SaaS) Altering audiences expectation of price of entry through free to play And a lack of strong marketing has destabilized a lot of audiences desire and tolerance for media

The fascinating thing for me is that in times of recession and depression, the entertainment industry used to be safe havens from economic downturns cause people always need entertainment. Its the safe investment when everything else isnt. But over the last 20 years, that safety has been eroded away
