This is so on point. So many use cases are barely working reliably (if that) with state of the art models and non-deterministic operations makes testing a beast. I cannot begin to imagine trying to build apps on anything that's not top of the line.

Personally, 2024 was finally the year of Linux on the desktop. After years of dual booting (mostly for gaming), I've been running Universal Blue images (atomic distro based on Fedora Silverblue) all year without issue. Modern game tech, enthusiast hardware, & game compat on launch are pretty good.

Not true—no data ever showed Twitter’s character limit had any impact on literacy. We analyzed this deeply in 2015. Despite having a 1k limit, the average Facebook post was far shorter than 140 chars :) The limit increase was for use-case expansion, not fixing something broken most users.

Long tenure's effect on a team's productivity & ability to recruit isn't rewarded enough. Ex: I have several peers I've worked with daily for 5-10 years. Many have left the team and returned. That built trust reduces friction, allows high velocity, and is very attractive in recruiting.

It's hard to overstate how badly that Google Authenticator not implementing basic functionality for TWELVE YEARS hurt the uptake of TOTP 2FA. People permanently losing their codes cost millions in service desk costs. Being implemented in time for TOTP to die to passkeys is truly the cherry on top.

Undertook a weekend project to cool down my home server. Been using the Jonsbro N1 as a small ITX NAS and homelab, and it's been running warm! Removed the front panel, installed a 3000rpm Noctua 14cm, and zip tied a second 14cm as CPU Exhaust. What a difference! 15c-20c on the CPU and disks.
