The dangerous heat and humidity here in the Twin Cities wouldn’t be particularly notable in, say, San Antonio. Which makes it all the more dangerous up here.

This aspect of those "safe/unsafe" maps also deserves to be highlighted a lot more. There's a (very gentry) assumption that having protections on the books automatically makes trans people safer. But in reality "blue" state and local governments regularly refuse to enforce trans protections at all

Queer bodies, especially trans bodies, are inherently political in our society. From what appearance is acceptable to have, to what space they are allowed to occupy, to what medical care they can receive, there is no action that isn’t scrutinized, criticized, or made the subject of demagoguery.

A funny way of looking at the situation for trans people is that the culture considered the possibility of just accepting a harmless minority without having decades of drama first and then went "Nah, we'll do the drama."

My favorite streets to walk on in Minneapolis tend to have dedicated bike lanes at sidewalk-level. Like Hennepin Ave. Using a cane or rollator on those sidewalks is much more pleasant. Also easier to access the bus stops.

I think this post, in a great thread, really sums it up for a lot of us. I moved to a “safe” state 6 months ago but even here I still overall have fewer rights than I did a few years ago. My options for leaving the country are vanishingly small because of health and disability.

Today is the first day of Disability Pride Month. It feels very appropriate that it follows Pride Month. Queer people in general and trans people in particular have disabilities at higher rates than the general population. So I have a lot of company in being both trans and disabled.

I think the ban on gender marker changes for passports, trans people in the military, and a number of other Trump admin policies survive under the test they just set out under the 14th amendment. I believe protections for trans people under this constitution are effectively dead for a generation.

Having frequent transit service within 1/4 mile of apartments with affordable rents was very important to me when I was preparing to move to a safer for 🏳️‍⚧️ state. It’s very slim pickings and a major reason I ended up in Minneapolis.

Trans people are not “fighting for unpopular positions that society isn’t ready for.” Trans people are fighting to KEEP the rights we have enjoyed for decades. We have been able to legally change our gender markers since the 70s and before. Same with bathrooms, sports, youth, all for decades.

No matter how much experience you have living with chronic illness, nothing can prepare you for the pain and grief of losing bits of your baseline. Many of us have extremely limited function, but whatever we have left, we cherish. Losing it is painful. It’s a form of grief. It’s hard as heck.

Finally wandered down to Loring Park to do a little birding for the first time since I moved to Minneapolis. Saw so many red-winged blackbirds, a familiar and welcome sight from Texas, and saw my first wood ducks.
