“Your protagonist must be an active force.“ I like to write (and read) about characters who can’t or won’t be active, for any number of compelling reasons. There are so many kinds of stories to tell; why limit ourselves to the self-proclaimed “heroes”?

There are many people who simply do not understand the stakes and either understate or overstate them. The issue is not that AI will replace writers or w/e: it can't. The issue is that AI will make our working conditions significantly worse and harm the development of new artists in our fields.

The survey is open to non-members (I am not one) and to readers (who here is not &c.) so I encourage you to share your feelings on the matter. Don't assume that everyone already understands that AI is bad or why! I mean, people *should*, but you could say that about a lot of things.

Btw this is not any kind of dunk or gotcha. There was a time when folks thought AI was harmless & fun. None of us are perfect & we're all still learning. But -- the tools that do what AI supposedly does ALREADY EXIST! And they work BETTER than AI does! Using AI is not a necessity, nor inevitable!

SAME. Also, when I had to do research for my current WIP, I asked reference librarians for help. Librarians are an AMAZING resource, and some of the larger libraries have online forms you can use to get help!

I emailed @sfwa.org (and encourage all members to do so) that I would prefer that "Works that used LLMs at any point during the writing process” not be eligible for the Nebula ballot.
