In other words, if you're not making the effort to intentionally make Disability Justice part of the foundation of your local communities you're building, by default they will be ableist. Your community will be reproducing the problem.

My husband is a therapist and I can second all of this. A counselor who doesn't respect your pronouns or boundaries is not a good therapist.

Listening to this, it also feels like more evidence of how far some white people will go to defend white innocence, will invent space for themselves outside history. And when someone they say they respect patiently walks them through this, for all their valorization of “listening,” they won’t.

I do not think any principled person’s answer can be “Abandon your own moral commitments if the public refuses to accept them.”

The WHOLE POINT of moral reasoning is holding ones moral center PRECISELY when you might lose and when it is not to your advantage. All the birds can fly in the wrong direction and you have to hold your own in those moments.
