A weird thing happened during the indie romance boom in the mid-2010s: a bunch of women who did not have high earning potential on paper could abruptly start making $20k-100k a month self-pubbing romance. We watched so many marriages implode over it, y'all, when their husbands COULD NOT COPE.

I quite happily live in a neighborhood where most people do not share my religion, where multiple languages are represented, and where people have come from a lot of different countries. Bigoted assholes always assume everyone else actually shares their bigotries.

I feel like the condemned man in the old joke: he claims he can teach a horse to sing, so the king grants him a year's stay of execution. "But you'll never manage that!" "It's a year. Who knows? Maybe the king will die. Maybe I will die. Maybe the horse will learn to sing" /1

To all my friends on the US side of the border: I hope you are able to show your resistance tomorrow. Stay safe and remember there's no rule that says that protesting injustice and oppression can't be fun too. You're doing something good, you should feel good.

I'm freshly staggered at how the administration is led by hyper-privileged brats who've always had other people sweep in to clean up their messes. On some deep unconscious level they must think if they break the whole damn world, someone else will fix it, especially if they yell loud enough.

Canadians always wring our hands and debate what makes our country different from the US when it was always this: a profoundly different attitude toward other members of society. Somehow this has always been obvious to me which makes me frustrated when the topic comes up.

All the anti-war and anti-occupation protestors were right. All the far leftists were right. All the “woke scolds” and your friend who’s “too woke” were right. They were somehow even more right than they may have realized at the time. But really, it was always obvious they were right.

Aphantasia explained: When your mind works differently
For most people, memories come with a vivid mental picture: the face of a friend, the layout of a childhood home, the colours of a sunset. For others, those pictures simply don’t exist.
