I have been much struck by this too. Most people, I’m convinced, are by nature live-and-let-live, naturally compassionate, and relaxed about how other people differ from them, on a multitude of dimensions. Sure, some folk just go quiet (as is one’s right, of course) but very few are openly vicious.

One of the truly palpable things I've felt in the uk is just how at absolute odds my experience is with how I'm portrayed by the media and politician class in this country.
