Bats play crucial roles in biodiverse ecosystems the world over, yet they’re often overlooked in conservation planning. New research from Vietnam indicates the existing network of protected areas fails to adequately safeguard the small flying mammals, risking continued population declines.

Vietnam’s protected areas fall short of safeguarding most bats, study finds
Furry, feisty, and often on the wing, bats are tricky to observe, let alone to protect. Some species hibernate deep in caves or tree cavities for months at a time; many migrate long distances in…

Writing the section of the South Asia book on the run up to end of WWII and it is so utterly depressing how many political possibilities were foreclosed by the conflation of anti-colonialism with territorialized nationalism.

In my reporting, I have never called any country a climate leader. Reality of the crisis and my job as a journalist does not allow me to do that. Some Western journalists have no such qualms though. Bestowing 'climate leader' tags on rich, historical polluters who will *never* do their fair share

Time to make the awase dashi for miso soup. Making your dashi from scratch is tiers above the granules. It's easy, and quick, and stores in the fridge for 3-5 days. The ingredients can be found in many oriental grocery stores.

Identifying flaws in GenAI unfortunately offers a pretext for claims that perfecting the product is just a matter of time & money. So pointing to chatbots’ role in,say, suicides can only go so far if we don’t also identify the systemic, irresolvable lack of Gen AI’s human commitment bc math has none

You cannot run the basic infrastructures of a functioning society- healthcare to education-on systems that cut out human empathy & negotiation. So we have to reassert over and over again that the problems aren’t glitches or errors—even big ones. The problems are fundamental, systematic, endemic.

Flaws and glitches are minor concerns easily dismissed. Being “mid” is fine because someone can promise this will get less mid and plenty of people are willing to believe. GenAI isn’t mid. It’s linear algebraic sociopathy.

Sprinkle another third of your grated cheese on top of the fold. Here you can also add a little seasoning, if you like. I ground some pepper on top of the cheese. (A dusting of cayenne pepper would work well too.) (12/2)

...Now fold the bottom third up over the downfolded top third. (Here, if you like a shiny top on your scones, you could brush that final fold with cream. ( didn't bother. It does help the cheese stick a little better, though.) And sprinkle the rest of the cheese on top. Also more seasoning. (13/2)

When all the cheese is in place, press the whole piece of dough gently with your hands to encourage everything to hold together during the baking. (Do that *before* the cream and final cheese layer go on, if you're doing those.) ..Then start cutting. (14/2)

Also note: because of the potato, these have superior keeping qualities. (apologies for artificial light, pesky planet *does* keep turning) 😅 ...Try these split with a slice of ham or turkey inside, and run under the grill/broiler with more cheese. (17/17)
