Re: running groups for people living with long term conditions. Most groups are *group education* (‘expert’ leads group) and full of content. In contrast *group activation* relies on facilitation and learning from each other with little formal content. See Irvine Yalom’s common factors.

We are a long way indeed from systematically collecting and acting on the voices of patients. Abolishing Healthwatch and handing responsibility for its work to ICBs (which are themselves undergoing massive reorganisation) is in my own view a very bad move indeed by DHSC.

We’re asking research funders & universities to step up because together, they have the leverage - and frankly, the responsibility - to stop the drain and redirect billions currently flowing to commercial publishers 💸 back into community-owned systems that serve science, not profit. 9/n

Can you imagine what else we could do with that money? Fund researchers, students, labs, infrastructure… which all sounds better to me than enriching a publishing oligopoly. 3/n

Why? 🤑 In just the last 5 years, 4 publishers made $US 41 billion in revenue and $14.7B in profit - money that largely comes from taxpayer-funded research budgets. For context: the entire 2024 NSF budget was $9B USD. @elsevierconnect.bsky.social made $3.9B that year at a 38% profit margin. 2/n

It’s actually very sad to see that risk prediction has never gone away, despite so much evidence demonstrating how awful we are at predicting suicide and its related outcomes. This is an incredibly important piece of work that we should all read.

I think this measurement/modelling thread is widely applicable. In psych we seem to treat all constructs as latent constructs. But many are not. For example, in my field, I think suicide capability often fails structural tests because it is a formative construct being modelled as latent.

Do yourself a favour, read some of Frans de Waal's books. You'll learn loads about the animal kingdom (including humans). Covering topics like empathy, morality, intelligence in non-human animals. He was truly unique: he had great insights, wrote with intimacy, humour, connecting with readers.
