Are there some people who can't work because they're ill and would like to better and work? Sure. Does that mean getting people back to work should be something the NHS is responsible for? Absolutely not. And I doubt the NHS would be improved by adopting aspects of the benefits system's culture.

50% of adults say that in their last clinical encounter they were given information/advice that was not useful or actionable. No wonder. I’ve just trained 100 nurses in a variety of commskills. Not one had previously been taught chunk and check, ask tell ask or teach back. Basic adult ed skills.

This was a huge effort from the Winton team: several years of reviewing all the side effects information available, and working with patients on how best to display it. It was indeed the alternative original model for the nhs. Bevan was forced to go with an alternative set up due to the politics of doctors & voluntary hospitals at the time. However Bevan in 1954 wrote about moving to the LA model as his preference recently republished @heather-themj.bsky.social

I agree. I think that partly comes from setting your goal correctly. Biomedical goals often don't match people's (patients') goals. I think knowing where you want to go puts you on the path of finding the right 'scientific' methods (which might be a lot more from social sciences).

I’m uncomfortable with ‘following the science’ in the delivery of healthcare; it’s leading us up a highly biomedical path. I’m no RFK and I believe in an evidence based approach, but science is not just RCTs and syst. reviews. Frankly, we need NIHR and high IR editors to take their blinkers off

Hey Alf, yeah definitely a spirit of service & care. Think it's all the 'social determinants' feel especially relevant these days. Medical people can think "it's not my area", which isnt wrong, but think we can still aim to listen & be supportive, validate people's situations... best wishes🖐️

We need to make sure that everyone on NHS waiting lists has made an informed decision to join that list. We also need to ensure that we continue to care about those that are waiting…

I am with you Alf ...and even email just gets me into trouble ...I am safer picking up the phone..and I remember when public phone boxes were how you set your watch, overseas calls had to be booked in advance...and discharge summaries were typed with carbon paper to make a copy for the GP
