The 2nd time this week in LA that an elderly driver has killed people on a street where traffic safety measures which could have prevented it were cancelled by local council members caving to auto-centric nimbyism. These deaths are systemic policy choices.

In 21st century US politics, the two most important ongoing stories are: 1) The radicalization of the GOP, & 2) the degradation of the information environment, ie, the death of accountability journalism. Neither gets a fraction of the attention devoted to, say, annoying woke undergrads.

Back of the napkin math: California is going to spend a ~TRILLION~ dollars on transportation between now and 2045 when we reach our net zero GHG goal. Are we leveraging those funds to cut GHG, increase mobility, save households money and clean the air? It's hard to say and probably a mixed bag!

A modest proposal: Caltrans struggles with responsibly spending ~ $10 billion per year & inevitably ends up using it on galactically stupid stuff like expanding a highway that's going under the sea. Relieve them of the burden, $10 billion/year to the California Department of Actual Transportation

Agree with your bullets, but it's not primarily tradition that keeps Sundays free; it's the perceived politics. Electeds believe they will be run out of town if they change it, and simply don't see it as important enough to take the risk. They don't see making the change as winning any new support.
