Commentary: plans for more frequent passenger rail service from L.A. to the Coachella Valley beyond the long-distance Sunset Limited have been on the books for decades. However, steps towards implementation have been unsuccessful to date.

Today, Chicago’s third-busiest regional rail line got its most robust weekend schedule since at least 1981. These people are about to board a train during the middle of what was a two-hour gap in service. As a transit planner, there’s almost nothing better than watching people use a new service.

In this update from the Iowa Assoc. of Railroad Passengers, there’s new details on the Chicago-Quad Cities (Moline) corridor, with its ongoing challenges spending the long-active federal funding and restoring this route to service.

During my 4 days of riding transit in and around Boston, I rode 5 lines for the first time (Green Line Medford + Union Square, Fairmount Line, Fitchburg Line & SC Rail to New Bedford) totaling 128.2 of unique one-way miles thru 43 stations. Lifetime totals are now 13,394.23 miles & 3,333 stations.

Hello from Nashua, NH. After a brief visit with relatives here last night, I’m headed back to Baton Rouge today and taking Boston Express to Logan Airport. 13 weekday roundtrips between Nashua & South Station or Logan. Wish there was rail service but this is a good alternative.

I’m aboard MBTA/Keolis train #5715 en route to Forge Park via the Fairmount Line but I’m only riding to Readville and back. First opened in 1855, the Fairmount Line is MBTA’s shortest Commuter Rail route at 9.2 miles and is entirely contained in Boston’s city limits.

Just announced at DART State of the Agency: The Silver Line opening date will be October 25th! The whole DART system will be fare free on the 25th and the Silver Line will be fare-free for the first two weeks of service!

What I really like about the Reading & Northern RR is they run their excursion trains (both steam & diesel) like they've got somewhere to be, not a gentle stroll in the woods for that good olde tyme railroading. OFC, having a sizable network with for-profit freight helps. youtu.be/K1WmUToOOSs?...

Alright, folks: the issue seems to be that the tilting mechanism has not yet been approved by FRA. When it does, possibly not until the full NextGen fleet has been placed in active service, the times will be updated match the original equipment.

Looking to iron out the details regarding the claim that NextGen Acela is either slower than when original Acela debuted, or its scheduled slower today than original Acela trips. And schedule searches show BOS-WAS NG trips at 7h5m while original at 6h50m. Any insights on why?
