Man Katie Porter really is like the most informed on the specifics of housing policy. Tom Steyer appears to be second so far. If either wins i hope they administratively team up.

Glad Ezra is asking about California's uniquely high approval times. density critical residents here keep pointing to all the stalled downtown projects and fear these in their neighborhood. at Berkeley PlanCom i cited how all them took 3+ years just to get approval; highest in the developed world.

And then of course its a circular issue where high housing costs in California warrant higher wages for construction workers than in other states. The folks building apartments in San Francisco live in Richmond, Antioch and Tracy.

I do think about how if we had single-payer healthcare or at least some public option that labor costs for housing would drop considerably — particularly unionized projects where healthcare is a necessity and funded by the developer.

Jealous that LA is inaugurating new subway projects they worked on for decades, meanwhile Oakland and the surround areas haven't even considered rapid transit expansion since 1972.
