Really funny to ask a “Public Intellectual” what the last interesting academic paper they read was and for them to respond “I only read substack”

2️⃣ Private wealth is at record highs in all advanced regions. Public wealth, by contrast, has declined to turn negative in North America, fall near zero in Europe, while East Asia has stabilized with 25-30% of national wealth in public hands.

“I’m strong and I want to have like fifty kids and a farm” of course you do. You’re twelve. “I don’t want to eat vegetables I think steak and French fries is the only meal” hell yeah homie you’re twelve. “Maybe if there’s crime we should just send the army” bless your heart my twelve year old buddy

Technically speaking, if Disney owns the rights to Fox, who own Alien, and the Xenomorph reproduce via eggs made by a Queen. That means the Xenomorph is a Disney Princess. I am not taking questions.

i've been watching old episodes of Little House in the Prairie (why? idk) and something to note is that even in these shows heavily promoting "traditional" values that seem so conservative, the main characters are always promoting empathy, understanding, inclusiveness, kindness, forgiveness.

The character of the neighborhood is the people, not the buildings, and if neighborhoods don't add more housing when there's demand to live there, the people who make up the neighborhood get pushed out by people with more money.

If I were in charge of a police force in Illinois, I might consider targeted enforcement of 720 ILCS 5/24-1(a)(9), which makes it a class 4 felony to carry or possess a firearm while "hooded, robed or masked in such manner as to conceal his or her identity".

watched Instrument (1999) this week. it's really hard for me to have perspective on the 1999-2001 period, but this certainly really captured _something_ about it. come for the intense Fugazi performances, stay for the parts where they interview people waiting in line to see them

A ★★★★ review of Instrument (1999)
It's weird to be old. It's weird to watch this movie 25 years after it came out. It's weird to see something that at the time must have felt vital and important, but now feels like a time capsule from...

We are living in an era where we all—as citizens, employees, creators, fans, whatever—understand, value, and care far more about the larger things we are involved with than the people in charge of them, who as often as not distrust or even disdain our commitment.

This is very important: Many institutions like universities & corporations bending the knee to Trump aren't just otherwise independent organizations forced to comply. Rather, Trump's actions offer their management & owners an *opportunity* to do the Trumpist things they already wanted to do.

Thinking of an exurbanite who lives in Prosper, TX and votes for Trump. Median income is around $190k, everyone lives in a McMansion, excellent schools, and they voted to blow everything up because their phone told them about crime in Dallas, a city they live a 40 mile commute from and never visit.
