I’m on a plane for a panel on structural racism tomorrow at the University of Michigan. One of the questions is how do we communicate with people who might be hostile to social science on race? My answer is some folks are hopeless, and we write them off while convincing those we can.

In LA you can end up in the gang database if you're in a house that has anyone on the database, or if they visit your house. Literal toddlers are included on the gang database. It diminishes the weight of any testimony you give, enhances charges against you. There's no clean way to be removed.

It's entirely a fake controversy that went so far as to be perpetuated by dumb opinion polls and internet rage bait. That being said, I do think the people that ARE really upset about the term are a bit suspicious!

This is what it's always come down to for me. No one is saying that it isnt clunky and I think most people wouldn't use the term to describe the vast, varied groups that fall under the Latino/a/x/e umbrella.
