So it turns out... the US air travel system was incredibly, deeply dependent on federal funding to just run day-to-day all this time, to the benefit of private airline shareholders, when everyone thinks that state-run trains are leeching off the government. Weird!

Radio station jocks reading out crash after crash on the M50, N7, etc. Then in their next slot a phone-in competition where motorists are on their phones while driving. Every person who phoned in was driving. Perhaps radio stations could not accept calls from people driving & not normalise it.
