To say I’m less than impressed by Dublin City Council would be the understatement of the year. On “Car Free Day” they closed just 25 streets out of 4,000. That’s 0.625%. I cycled, walked and ran around Dublin and noticed little, if any, difference. The city was as car-dominated as always.

No, pedestrian and cyclist behaviour in Ireland isn’t perfect. Far from it. But our main problem is our unhealthy, dysfunctional relationship with cars. Speeding. Running red lights. Dangerous, illegal parking like below. These are everyday risks that we’ve normalised. We desperately need change!

Since when was it important to fit the “whole parish” in the boot?! This industry fuelled obsession with forever bigger cars is causing enormous harm to society.

The government is: ❌ Failing to provide good quality active transport infrastructure ❌ Failing to introduce a 30 km/h default urban speed limit ❌ Failing to protect people Make no mistake, the rise in people being killed is not an accident — it’s the result of political choices.

Agreed, I had the same thought on reading it. It’s not funny when in a 10-minute journey I witnessed cars driving through red lights at almost every junction, long after their light went red, and it’s getting worse. Any letters in IT about that? No.

This is appalling from the Irish Times. Anyone who walks or cycles around Dublin city regularly will be only too acutely aware of the risk from drivers accelerating through amber and red lights. This is not an issue to be joked about.

The Irish Times has published a truly dreadful letter this morning. Far from adding to the debate, letters like this do only one thing: stoking hostility between road users. It is divisive and antagonistic. And all this comes in a week when three people cycling have been killed on Irish roads.

Three people cycling have been killed in Ireland in the past week. Yet, the Irish media continue their inadequate, inaccurate reporting. These are people, not “cyclists,” being killed. Because of this poor reporting, those who don’t cycle have no idea how dangerous it is to cycle in Ireland.

Another appalling take by The Journal. Referring to this as a "fatal collision involving a bicycle and a truck in Cork city yesterday" is simply disgusting. It was a woman who was killed, not a bicycle. Three people cycling have been killed in Ireland in the past week — a shocking number.

This is absurd. How did we let society get here? Flying is kept artificially cheap with subsidies, despite being one of the most climate-damaging activities - while housing costs are pushed higher and higher by government policy. Our priorities are upside down.

Not a mention of emissions. Not a mention of climate change. Just media fuelled free advertising!

This picture perfectly sums up Ireland’s broken, car-centric transport system. Cars are prioritised above all else, while pedestrians and cyclists are forced to share slithers of space. This system doesn’t just fail—it harms us all.
