Ukraine was a legitimate and fully-fledged part of the USSR. Brezhnev was a Ukrainian. Khrushchev was head of the CPU. Chernenko and Gorbachev had ties to Ukraine. Well-developed agriculture and industry, and military and engineering capacity were a trademark of Ukraine within the Soviet Union.

The key issue here is: will the West allow Zelensky to win the elections?

In addition, Zelensky will probably try to rig the elections every way possible. He controls the state, the security apparatus, the military administration, and the parliament (through his allies). Taking all of this into account, he has a chance to win the elections.

The most serious opponent of the current president, apart from Zaluzhny, is Kyrylo Budanov. Budanov recently became a key ally of Zelensky (his chief of staff), so it's not clear if he would take part in the elections. The rest of the candidates don't matter.

The issue here is not Zelensky but the quality of his opponents. According to the polls, Zaluzhny would win the elections. So, if Zaluzhny participates in the elections and if the elections are fair, Zelensky stands no chance against the ex-commander-in-chief of the ZSU. If the elections are fair.

Western security guarantees are a main goal for Ukraine, not a ceasefire. The Ukrainians know that the ceasefire is impossible to achieve because the Russians won't agree to it.
