Again, this is a broad coalition of people across the ideological spectrum whose top concern is making sure everyone rues and laments the “Woke Times” forever. It’s very much akin to the myths around “Negro misrule” in Reconstruction, which justified Jim Crow.

People have many paths of reasoning and justification for why they’re part of this political project is totally legitimate and justifiable on its own merits, but make no mistake, they’re all working in the same direction.

There’s a reason the 1619 Project, MeToo, BLM, etc, are all common obsessions and bete noirs for them.

Were there people who were disingenuous about their commitments? Absolutely. Is this true in every movement? Yes. Were some people misguided or overzealous? Yes. Is this true in every movement? Yes. These only become defining when people want to discredit the core argument they’re avoiding.

Again, this is similar to the way “corruption” and “graft” became the defining characteristics of Reconstruction for the Redeemers, despite these being common characteristics of politics at the time and even today.

What makes this echo more to me in the moment is the fact that the targets most commonly cited were those who were best able to exercise power at the local and municipal level. Broad grassroots movements to change cash bail and sentencing rules across the country, city by city, etc.

Similarly, the Redeemers were also a nationally organized reaction to the gains made by formerly enslaved people that were most substantial at the local and state levels. A top down imposition of order against a bottom up exercise of democracy imo.

Yes, thank you for the clear analysis and useful comparison. This myth has been intentionally developed and disseminated, and it is used on a daily basis to blame the left for the right’s hatred and censoriousness.

Tangentially, I think this is also expressed in liberals and leftists refusing to take responsibility for which voices of the other group they listen to and make avatars for why they hate them.

If a movement contains zero people who are overzealous or bad-faith, it is probably not a very effective movement. Any movement exercising real power will feature people trying to misuse that power. This doesn't excuse us from the need to seek justice.
