Yes and no. Under white supremacy masculinity is defined by white men. Thus Asian men can’t be manly because they’re not white. That comes through in American media, but also informs how Americans view Asian media. Asian men in Asian dramas are masculine in their cultural, not desexualized at all.

I think we work through a lot of our feelings through art and entertainment. I don’t doubt that the rise of the sympathetic violent white guys in media is all of America, not just white women, grappling with how truly terrible white men have historically been, even our heroes. Lots of Daddy issues.

I’ve been pondering a phenomenon that I’ve seen a lot in fandom that can be best exemplified in the casting of Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights. Namely, depicting the white man as the dangerous, oppressed, sexy, “brut” character while making the man of color the boring, sexless, safe choice.
