This is why I loathe the "product of their time" defense. Not only does it decenter & erase the people being oppressed who knew it was wrong, it also ignores their allies who were speaking out then. At no time were empathetic decent people absent, even if they were outnumbered.

Another thing that I do to support my students is that I acknowledge what’s happening, and I don’t pretend that stuff like this is normal, and that everything’s fine. I have had students tell me that they feel like they’re going crazy because they see what is happening but no one will speak of it.
