core part of the ostensible economic justification for mass deportation was that Americans would rush in to take all the jobs immigrants left, but now unemployment rates for native born Americans are rising and the admin is sending people out to do damage control

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan says London Centric's investigation shows the need for greater regulation of the algorithms on sites such as TikTok to stop "bad faith actors spreading hate for clicks". "Accounts are talking London down because the algorithms reward them for doing so," he says.

Hate-filled fake videos about London are everywhere. We've obtained a recording of a TikToker confessing to secretly filming Londoners in their homes for clicks. He says it's not political. He just wants to make money from far-right anger. Read what he says:

Ian Austin, an Army veteran, was arrested for protesting ICE in Minneapolis. But he’s continued protesting. Senior reporter
@julialurie.bsky.social
spoke to him. “When they say, ‘Why would you be out here?’ How the fuck could I not be out here?” he says. “My nation is under attack."

The execution of Alex Pretti is playing so badly because you can look at his actions and life story - his last act was helping, boy scout, athlete, health care worker to veterans - and compare those to the men who killed him and know which you would want to be your son, brother, father, uncle.

This is Minneapolis. Literally every corner along Lake St. packed with people holding candles, many singing, honoring a person who by all accounts was an absolute gem of a human, whose life was tragically stolen by a fascist, paramilitary occupation force.

The Gettysburg Address was a “this isn’t us” speech. Much of MLK Jr’s rhetoric was “this isn’t us.” He and Lincoln were well aware of history. They were also aware of how argument works.

Get the feeling we’re in for another round of “this isn’t us” v “it’s always been us” which will be as sterile as always. Different rhetorics exist for different purposes and different audiences. A normative exhortation isn’t trying to do the same work as an academic analysis.

John is a part-time teacher on £18,000 and is on Universal Credit. This is the only income for a family of 4. For every extra pound he earns, he takes home just over 30p, an effective tax of about 67%. Strangely, this sort of example never seems to get in the papers

People who say this are clearly speaking aspirationally about a shared American creed they hold dear. “Have you heard of the Trail of Tears?” is not a very helpful response, because they probably have and the priority right now is moral opposition to fascism and not fake-educating each other.

This is false. Deportations reduce housing demand, but they shrink housing supply even more as the construction sector loses workers. Trump's deportations will make housing less affordable.
